Northside Business Spotlight
Business Rock of the Northside
For Teto Wilson, being a barber is about more than just hair. As a barber for over 20 years, he knows the integral role they play in their clients’ lives, building trusted relationships that go way beyond just a monetary transaction. These connections make the barbershop a natural community space, one where people can connect with one another and community resources. Wilson’s passion for community has led him to create a barbershop that acts as a community resource hub. It’s a space for events ranging from the Wilson’s Image Ugly Sweater Holiday Potluck to serious conversations around community-police relations. He’s also made an effort to open his space to up-and-coming entrepreneurs, like the Black Threadist’s Tiffani Washington.
Last year, Wilson started two new projects. He started the Wilson’s Image College Scholarship Fund for African-American college-going students from the Northside, which is a scholarship program and support system for new college students. In July 2018 he started his own apparel line featuring the slogans, “Up Your Image” and “Black Loves Rocks.” Just like Wilson’s shop, the slogans are celebrations of the power that exists on the Northside. He believes the strong community ties that exist between Northsiders are the neighborhood’s greatest asset. He understands that these relationships are strongest when open and honest conversations are had around issues that affect the community. He’ll continue facilitating these conversations, with his next focus pushing for better housing options so that all residents feel at home here on the Northside.
The Toast to Northside Business Awards is an annual event celebrating outstanding Northside businesses and entrepreneurs. Businesses were nominated by their peers with 2018 awards given in the following categories:
Business Rock of the Northside: In recognition of the vital role they play in the community and their rock-solid support of those around them
Paper Maker of the Northside: In recognition of their business saavy and building wealth in North Minneapolis
Scissor Business of the Northside: In recognition of their innovation and ability to CUT through expectations and create change
Business spotlights videography and photography by Farrington Llewellyn of the West Broadway Business & Area Coalition (WBC) with interviewing and website design by Anna Schmiel of NEON.
These awards were made possible by the newly restarted Northside Business Lunches. These monthly gatherings are opportunities for local businesses to connect and learn about business best practices. These lunches are a collaboration between NEON and WBC, with additional sponsorship by North MPLS and the Northside Neighborhoods Council (NNC).
